Bio-Base Mold-Making Urethane Materials

Introduction

Northstar Polymers has developed bio-base mold-making materials, which contain more than 40% of renewable materials derived from agricultural products.  The physical properties of these materials are comparable to near-100% petroleum based materials used in this application.  In comparison with the petroleum derived materials, the prices are very competitive and very stable.  The contained renewable materials include refined soybean oil polyols, whose major raw material is soybeans grown in the United States.

The formulations are designed to give important characteristics as a mold-making material.  The properties of the formulations include:

bullet

Two-part casting system

bullet

Liquid at room temperature

bullet

Low viscosity of the mixture to create fine resolution

bullet

Allows relatively long pot-life

bullet

Cures within overnight for demolding hardness

bullet

Yields the ideal hardness range for mold materials for concrete products

bullet

Less susceptible to atmospheric moisture in operation

Property Comparisons with the Standard Mold-Making Materials

Our lab tests indicate that these bio-base mold-making materials compare very well against existing petroleum base materials.  The following is the typical properties of the new Bio-Base formulations as well as the standard mold-making materials at two different hardness ranges.
